History of Modern Law Enforcement

Modern law enforcement is primarily accomplished by state level police forces. The first police force, that resembles modern policing systems, was established around 1667 in France by King Louis XIV. However, most police officers refer to the police systems that developed in Europe and Asia during the 1800s as the first truly modern policing systems. These systems included: the Glasgow Police, the Marine Police of London and the Parisian Napoleonic police.

The original roles of modern police forces were to prevent urban crimes and to deter urban disorder. These priorities were first put into motion by the 1829 London Metropolitan Police Department. Many police forces around the world, including the U.S., also adopted these professional goals. However, in the 1930s, the priority of police activities changed from preventative measures to the enforcement of the criminal law. This change was inspired by the rising popularity of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Patrol Officers

Most modern police forces focus the bulk of their personnel on patrol duty. Patrol officers monitor current activities of citizens in their jurisdiction. Their focus is to both deter crimes and disorder from occurring and to respond to crimes that are in progress. Patrol officers are also critical first responders for emergencies and disasters. They use their training to control panic, to keep accident scenes safe and to help people navigate through the road system when technology fails. Because patrol officers have such an important job, it is important that they have a professional looking business card.

Detectives

Another type of police office is the detective. A detective focuses their professional energy on investigating crimes and analyzing clues. Because these police officers need to collect a large amount of data and information from a variety of people and sources they need a professional looking business card that contains their contact information. These cards can be handed out to witnesses, experts, lab technicians and other people the detective is working with so that they have a way of contacting the detective when they have new information to share.

Special Units

Most law enforcement departments also have a variety of special units. For example, there may be a homicide unit, a fraud unit, a bomb squad unit, a SWAT unit, and a Homeland Security unit. If you belong to a special law enforcement unit, then you will want to highlight this on your business card.
