From the dawn of civilization, delivery services have been important. They started out as courier services dispatched on foot or horse, and slowly evolved to elaborate international parcel services that utilized the latest travel technology to deliver messages and packages from point A to point B as quickly as possible.
Today there are several leaders in this industry: the U.S. Postal Service, Federal Express and United Parcel Service. However, there are dozens of smaller companies that are giving these industry leaders a run for their money.
U.S. Postal Service
The U.S. Postal Service is one of the largest delivery services in the world. It delivers letters and packages, and it offers several specialty delivery services such as two day service, overnight delivery and international delivery. Employees of the U.S. Postal Service fill several job niches including: mail couriers, salespeople, truck drivers, pilots, loaders and inspectors. If you work for the USPS then your business card needs to reflect your civil service appointment. Fed Ex is a great alternative to the USPS for delicate, valuable or hazardous materials. If you work for Fed Ex then chances are you will want to use the Fed Ex logo in the design of your business card. You may also want to include your photo, especially if you are in the sales department.
United Parcel Service
UPS, United Parcel Service, is the larges courier and freight service in the world. It was founded back in 1907 in the bustling town of Seattle, Washington. Today, UPS is known for its international delivery, its brown trucks and its quick delivery service. If you work for UPS as a driver, customer service rep or administrative professional, then you need to tie the UPS marketing theme into your business card's design. Since most people connect the brown delivery trucks with UPS, you will want to incorporate the color brown or a graphic of a UPS truck, into the design of your business card.
Local Courier/Messenger Services
While large courier and delivery services handle most of the long distance deliveries, local courier and messenger services usually handle in-city deliveries. This is especially true if you are in a larger city. If you own or work for a local courier or messenger service, then your business card will be used to both help your current customers learn who you are and to build up your clientele.
